What to check before you buy

• Lamp: hours on the current lamp, and any spare. An aging lamp can drift in color and be near the end of its rated life.
• Ballast: electronic or magnetic, its flicker-free and high speed modes, input voltage, and that it strikes and restrikes the lamp reliably.
• Head cable: no cuts, crushed sections or damaged connectors.
• Lens and UV glass: the protective lens or glass in place and uncracked, since HMI lamps give off ultraviolet light.
• Safety: any lens door safety switch works, and the socket and igniter show no burning.
• Beam: a clean reflector, smooth spot to flood, and no hot spots.
• Accessories: scrims, spread lenses on PAR fixtures, barn doors and cases.

What does flicker-free mean on an HMI ballast?

A flicker-free ballast drives the lamp so its output stays steady on camera across a wider range of frame rates and shutter angles. Check which modes the ballast offers if you shoot high speed.

Can I buy an HMI head without a ballast?

Yes, but you then need a ballast rated for that lamp wattage and the right head cable. Check compatibility before you buy.

How much power does an HMI need?

It depends on the wattage and the ballast. Check the ballast's input rating against your generator or distro.

Why does lamp age matter?

HMI lamps have a rated life from their maker, and output and color can drift as a lamp ages. A lamp near the end of its rated hours is a cost to plan for.
